UNITES – Uncertainty Integration for a Transition in Energy and Sustainability
Geopolitical and socio-economic uncertainties can significantly impact energy and climate policies, putting pressure on the analyses that inform public decision-making and increasing the risk of failing to meet climate goals.
The UNITES - Uncertainty Integration for a Transition in Energy and Sustainability - project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and coordinated by Professor Stefano Moret of the Department of Management Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, addresses this challenge by developing a new paradigm for long-term energy planning that systematically integrates uncertainty into energy-climate models.
UNITES will focus on three main contributions:
- the development of theoretical advances to represent different types of uncertainty in energy planning;
- the construction of databases capable of quantifying and characterising uncertainties in model inputs;
- the adoption of artificial intelligence methods to translate complex modelling results into clear, actionable policy recommendations.
UNITES' approach aims to provide decision-makers with advanced tools to develop robust and flexible energy strategies capable of adapting to highly uncertain global scenarios.
