STAPLES - STable food Access and Prices and Lower Exposure to Shocks
The project aims to inform resilience strategies of public and private actors through evidence-based knowledge creation, systematization, and dissemination. Resilience refers to stressors and shocks arising from global grain value chains (GVCs) in the MENA region, with a specific focus on Morocco and Egypt. Stability is a pillar of food security that requires not only that food is available, accessible, and well used but also that these conditions are stable and predictable, emphasizing the centrality of information.
MENA countries are particularly exposed to the international grain shock because they are largely dependent on imports to feed their populations and food self-sufficiency is not an option for them due to water scarcity. A deep understanding of such external shocks and stressors and coping strategies is critical. Specific objectives are:
1. Generate a better understanding, targeted to governments and economic actors involved in the grain value chain in the MENA region, of the stressors and shocks that arise from global value chains and threaten local grain supply chains
and food security.
2. Develop innovative solutions and evidence-based recommendations for strategies, action plans, and best practices that governments and economic actors in MENA food systems along the grain value chain can use to improve the resilience of systems and ensure food security.
3. Improve the preparedness of governments and economic actors in the grain sector and food systems to anticipate and cope with external stressors and shocks by integrating new knowledge and data from available platforms into a Decision Support System (DSS) to guide the adoption of solutions identified by the project.
