GreenDiLT - Green Digital Learning and Teaching is an Erasmus+ project focused on assessing and reducing the environmental impact of digital technologies used in educational contexts.
Coordinated by Arts et Métiers (France), the project brings together a consortium of leading European institutions:
- Politecnico di Milano (Italy)
- TU Delft (Netherlands)
- AgroParisTech (France)
- École des Ponts ParisTech (France)
The project addresses several pressing challenges: the increasing use of digital technologies in education is driving significant changes in teaching and learning practices. At the same time, sustainable development and the energy crisis have become strategic priorities for educational institutions, which are increasingly committed to transitioning toward more sustainable and energy-efficient training models.
Together, the GreenDiLT partners have collaborated to study the environmental impact of digital teaching and develop practical tools to help students, lecturers, university staff and institutions make more sustainable digital choices, including:
- A Life Cycle Assessment study that compares the environmental footprint of different teaching methods – traditional, hybrid and virtual – offering a perspective based on the entire life cycle.
- The Digital Carbon Footprint Calculator enables users to explore the environmental impact of everyday digital activities, raising awareness of behaviours in academic settings and beyond.
- The GreenDiLT Toolkit brings together resources on digital sustainability and the project's tools, as well as materials for training and raising awareness among students, lecturers, technical and administrative staff, and the wider educational community.
- A modular, 'à la carte' training programme provides knowledge, tools, and practical actions to help reduce the ecological impact of digital technologies in education.
- The white paper 'Towards Digital Sobriety' sets out principles, recommendations, and best practices to encourage more sustainable digital behaviour at individual and institutional levels.
