Full Professor

Federico Frattini is Full Professor of Strategic Management and Innovation at Politecnico di Milano and Dean of POLIMI Graduate School of Management, the Business School of Politecnico di Milano. He is Co-founder and Deputy Director of Energy & Strategy, a research and advisory group of Politecnico di Milano specialized in strategy and innovation across the energy, energy efficiency, smart mobility, and circular economy sectors. He is also Co-founder and Co-Director of Innovation, Strategy & Family Business, a knowledge center of Politecnico di Milano focused on strategy, family business management, and open innovation. Professor Frattini serves on the International Advisory Board of TUM School of Management (Germany), EADA Business School (Spain), and MIB Trieste School of Management (Italy). He is also a member of several boards and scientific committees, including the Scientific Committee of MIT Technology Review Italia, the Board of Directors of AiIG (the Italian Association of Management Engineering), and the Scientific Committee of the Philosophy & Business Unit at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. Author of books published by EGEA and Bocconi University Press and of more than 200 scientific publications, he is also Ambassador of the Innovation Alliance – The City of the Future within Federated Innovation @MIND, an ecosystem dedicated to urban innovation.

Research

Federico Frattini's research activity focuses on innovation and strategy, with a particular emphasis on family businesses and innovation in the energy sector. On these topics, he has published over 200 contributions, including articles, books, and conference proceedings, which have appeared in leading international journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, MIT Sloan Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Academy of Management Perspectives, California Management Review, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and many others. He is an Associate Editor for the CERN IdeaSquare Journal of Experimental Innovation and a member of the Editorial Board for the European Journal of Innovation Management. He also collaborates as a reviewer for numerous international scientific journals. His studies have also been widely featured in publications for managers and practitioners, such as Harvard Business Review, European Business Review, Harvard Business Manager, and Il Sole 24 Ore. He was an Honorary Researcher at Lancaster University Management School, and in 2013, he was named among the Top 50 researchers globally in Technology and Innovation Management by IAMOT (International Association for Management of Technology).

Grants, awards and Honours

In March 2018 the International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA), in a review of “Rising Stars in Family Business Research”, included four of his articles among the most influential recent ones on family firms worldwide.

One of his papers was awarded as the Best Practitioner Focused Paper Award at the Family Enterprise Research Conference (Portland, Oregon, USA, 21-23 Giugno 2014).

In 2013 Federico was nominated among the top 50 authors in the field of innovation and technology management worldwide by IAMOT, the International Association for Management of Technology.

In 2021 he was nominated as Ambassador of the Innovation Alliance - The City of the Future of Federated Innovation @ MIND.

Federico is Associate Editor of the CERN IdeaSquare Journal of Experimental Innovation, Member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Product Innovation Management and of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Innovation Management, and Consulting Editor of the International Journal of Management Reviews

Federico has been Guest Editor of many special issues on innovation and strategic management published in journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Product Innovation Management, California Management Review, Global Strategy Journal, International Journal of Management Reviews and others. Frattini is acknowledged as an international expert in the field of digital learning, and his thoughts and projects are regularly featured on national and international outlets.
