De Carolis Anna

Researcher

Anna De Carolis is Assistant Professor in the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano.

She graduated in Management Engineering in 2014 and she holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering at Politecnico di Milano with a dissertation thesis on how to develop transformation roadmap to improve operations practice through digital technologies in manufacturing companies.

She teaches Sustainable Manufacturing course for MSc students.

She is currently involved in European, national and regional research projects, such MICS - Made in Italy Circolare e Sostenibile, and in several industrial projects.

Career

Anna De Carolis earned her Master’s Degree in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (final grade: 109/110) and, in 2014, began a Ph.D. within the Manufacturing Group at the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano, focusing on Smart Manufacturing.

During her doctoral studies, she participated in national and international research projects and developed the DREAMY model (Digital Readiness Assessment MaturitY), awarded as Best Research at the APMS 2016 conference and validated in collaboration with NIST (USA).

The model has been applied in more than 300 national and international companies (including Leonardo, Thales Alenia Space Italia, Fincantieri NexTech, Agrati, Whirlpool, Comau, and Illy Caffè) and forms the basis of the Industria 4.0 Test, adopted by Confindustria and the Digital Innovation Hubs to support around 3,000 Italian SMEs. The DREAMY methodology is also used by the MADE Competence Center to guide companies in defining their digital transformation strategies.

Since 2017, she has been involved in applied research and technology transfer activities, having developed over 50 industrial projects in collaboration with Italian and international manufacturing companies.

In parallel, she has gained extensive experience in university and executive education at Politecnico di Milano (since 2023, lecturer of the course Sustainable Manufacturing), the Graduate School of Management (GSoM POLIMI), and innovation centers such as the MADE Competence Center.

Her research and technology transfer activities focus on digital transformation, Industry 4.0, and sustainability in manufacturing, in close collaboration with the Italian and international industrial ecosystem.

Research

Anna De Carolis carries out research on digital and sustainable transformation in manufacturing, with a strong focus on applied research and technology transfer.

Her work is part of the MICS Project – Made in Italy Circolare e Sostenibile (Circular and Sustainable Made in Italy), the National Partnership promoting a regenerative, responsible, and competitive manufacturing system. Within this framework, her research focuses on developing methods and tools to support the ecological and digital transition of Italian manufacturing companies, aiming to make it tangible, measurable, and scalable.

Her main research areas include:

  1. Sustainable innovation of production models, through the adoption of digital technologies and regenerative practices;
  2. Creation of collaborative ecosystems connecting companies, research centers, institutions, and territories to foster knowledge sharing and co-innovation;
  3. Definition of metrics and shared standards to assess the maturity and impact of sustainability in manufacturing, contributing to the establishment of a recognizable benchmark for Circular Made in Italy.

The overarching goal is to support companies in their journey toward a more digital, sustainable, and competitive manufacturing model, strengthening the connection between academic research and industrial practice.
