CASCADE - Criticality Analysis for Supply Chain Availability and Dependency Evaluation
CASCADE is a research project funded by the Ministry of University and Research (PRIN-PNRR call) and coordinated by the University of Bologna (Prof. Paolo Barbieri). The project is currently underway and is set to conclude by the end of 2025.
CASCADE investigates the theme of “critical supplies” (e.g., CRM – Critical Raw Materials) with the objective of understanding their actual degree of criticality, the impacts on supply chains, and potential risk mitigation actions.
The project’s objectives are as follows:
- To explore businesses’ perceptions regarding the issues and risks associated with critical supplies, investigating similarities and differences across types of supply and sectors of the end-user enterprise;
- To develop a multi-level risk analysis methodology (i.e., one extending across different levels of the value chain) to assess the risk posed by critical supplies and to identify the risk management strategies currently in use;
- To conduct a pilot case study applying this methodology to a selected supply chain;
- To evaluate the potential impact of circular economy initiatives (e.g., recovery and recycling of critical materials from end-of-life products) in mitigating critical supply issues;
- To increase awareness among entrepreneurs, managers, industry associations, and policymakers regarding this issue.
